![]() In the late 90's RFC-2544 was 'invented' to test and compare network elements - it too wasn't ideal, and has many 'limitations' and can pose a risk to the network, but it was better than relying purely on BERT. Naturally BERT was the first test method of choice because it was familiar but it doesn't really cover the variables needed. We have to consider 'new' parameters such as frame sizes, frame rates, bursts that were not there before. ![]() Then along came these 'frames' and 'packets' and the world of transmission evolved. ![]() In the 'good old days' of PDH and then SDH TDM transmission it was easy to test using a simple Bit Error Rate Test (BERT) to validate that the transmission was error free. It exists at many speeds and interfaces from 10Mbps electrical all the way to 100Gbps. Whether we like it or not, in the world of Telecoms, Ethernet is now the transmission medium of choice and has become both ubiquitous and commoditized. ![]()
